How They Met

Work Hard, Play Hard

Katie and Blake started dating as many TV couples do: in the workplace. Blake had a less-than professional interest in Katie from day one at his new job. Katie, who's relationship status seemed forever set to "it's complicated," was characteristically oblivious. It didn't take long for their co-workers to see the connection. After much prodding (and some day drinking) a newly-single Katie decided to go for it. Blake wisely took her shopping on their first date. From then on, they were inseparable.

The Proposal

First comes love, then comes a puzzle

Katie and Blake share a love of games. One of their favorite pastimes is solving crossword puzzles together, which Blake cleverly incorporated into the proposal. Blake actually made a crossword puzzle generator to build one with all of his own clues and answers. He brought it to their fancy anniversary dinner at Piccolo Sogno. It also happened to be Katie's first day of work at a new job (in the wedding industry, ironically enough!). Despite an answer to the puzzle being "shiny ring," Blake made it quite clear that nothing important was happening on that day and that he had not gotten a ring yet. "Cool cool cool," she said. After filling out the entire crossword, Katie and Blake left the restaurant and went back to Wicker Park. Before he opened the door to his apartment, Blake stopped to give Katie another page of the crossword that he forgot about. He handed her a sheet that only had space for three letters. The clue: "The answer to the question posed by the odd-numbered blocks." Katie was now fully confused, so he had to spell it out for her. "Will You Marry Me?" was hidden in the crossword puzzle the whole time! Katie thinks she said yes, but she also blacked out a little. Katie, very shocked and excited, thought this had been an adequately wonderful day. She walked into the apartment to find all of their closest friends there to surprise her! A smart person blasted "This is what dreams are made of" from the Lizzie McGuire movie. Champagne was had, and Challah bread was enjoyed (thanks Liz!). Moose only threw up once from social anxiety, but there were some scratched victims. All in all, it was the best Monday ever.
